North Fork Restaurants on Eastern Long Island New York (NY)

Baiting Hollow Restaurants
Greenport Restaurants
Mattituck Restaurants
Riverhead Restaurants
Shelter Island Restaurants
Southold Restaurants
South Fork Restaurants

At one time most locals could have recited the menus of our restaurants by memory. No more! The growing popularity of the North Fork has caused a tremendous increase not only in the number of dining establishments, but also to the variety of their offerings. We can now boast that within our boundaries you can find the oldest restaurant with continued family ownership in the US and also a new trendy spot with European and cosmopolitan flare.

Some of our restaurants can host weddings of small to medium size. (Those establishments capable of hosting large weddings are also listed on the Venue/Catering Page.) Others are ideal choices for small intimate gatherings. Remember to check "Insider's Advice" to get suggestions and perhaps a special promotion!

Greenport Restaurants

Bay & Main Restaurant
300 Main Street
Greenport, NY 11944
(631) 477-1442

When you want to kick back, have a really fun time, and experience the North Fork in all its casual glory, this is the place you should go. The food is to die for. The menu is eclectic with choices ranging from traditional clam chowder to five spice tuna to Cornish Game Hen served with Texas beans! They offer "light choices," fabulous appetizers, and some good choices for late night snacks. The atmosphere is super friendly so you will most likely meet new friends, both locals and tourists, at the cocktail bar. Enjoy music on the weekends and in warm weather stroll down to Greenport Harbor. I couldn't agree more with the NY Times when it said every town should have a Bay & Main. Enjoy it! (See Catering)

The Soundview Restaurant
57185 North Road (Route 48)
Greenport, NY 11944
(631) 477-0666
www.SoundviewRestaurant.com

This restaurant's advertisements really tell it all: "You'll come for the view, and return for the food." The tables are arranged right along the windows facing LI Sound and the beach is right below you. The seating area is long rather than deep, so even if you don't get a "window" seat you have just as fine a view; sunsets are spectacular. My favorite menu items are the shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, and broiled flounder, but my husband, Jay, likes the steaks. The Soundview Restaurant is just as appropriate for a romantic dinner for two (in warm weather, you can dine outside on the waterfront deck), as it is for a bridesmaid luncheon, a rehearsal dinner, or just joining friends and family. When you are totally saturated with food and views, retire to the piano bar for an after dinner drink! I send my guests there all the time for dinner and they are all pleased. Pricing is good. Mattituck Restaurants

Porto Bello Restaurant
9095 Sound Avenue
Mattituck, NY
(631) 298-5577
www.portobello-ny.com

Once people discover this family owned restaurant, they become loyal customers. Although it has moved locations since it first arrived on the scene many years ago, it has never moved from the top of the list for those enjoying fabulous food, gracious service, and warm hospitality. Fans will follow it anywhere! Whether you choose to have lunch or dinner, you can relax in an airy open beamed dining room or a charmingly cozy solarium. The food has a decidedly Italian flair, but other menu choices are equally fine. In season there is an outdoor bar and music on weekends. Porto Bello is a find to be treasured and shared!

The Red Door Restaurant
13550 Main Road
Mattituck, NY 11952
(631) 298-4800
www.reddoorrestaurant.com

Whenever we are getting together with friends for dinner, one restaurant that is always suggested is The Red Door, and its nomination is greeted with enthusiasm. When the local people choose a restaurant as one of their favorites, you know you have found a gem. The décor is simple and uncluttered, and relies on the crisp white of the tablecloths and the myriad of tiny white lights to set the tone. The food is excellent as Chef Stephan Mazzella is brilliant. True gourmets will swoon and those who enjoy plainer fare will be equally delighted. I highly recommend this restaurant for rehearsal dinners and small weddings. Off premise catering is also available. What better way to assess the food for your special event than by enjoying a meal at this lovely and special establishment?

The Restaurant at Four Doors Down
Main Road (across from Mattituck Plaza)
Mattituck, NY 11952
(631) 298-8311

This restaurant has been rather a secret spot for those in the know on the North Fork. It is named Four Doors Down as it is part of a building that has been part of the Mattituck Scene for years and years and yes, there are four doors into it! One of the doors leads to this charming restaurant with fireplace in winter and a beautiful décor. The menu features many East End favorites, but also has a decidedly German flare. The sauerbraten is exquisite! Lunch and dinner are served and everyone will find something to suit his taste and mood. Some people like to start the evening in the Pub area (which is the third down) and then move into a more relaxing spot for their meals. There is also a large room decorated just as beautifully in the back of the building that is used for rehearsal dinners, private parties, and other social functions. You'll enjoy any meal here and you won't suffer from sticker shock either. Do visit and enjoy!

A Touch of Venice
2255 Wickham Avenue
Mattituck, NY 11952
(631) 298-5851
www.TouchOfVenice.com

There are so many reasons I love this restaurant: the food, the location, the ambience and the people. Last time I was there I had a stuffed artichoke and the lobster special; it was to die for! The restaurant is situated on Mattituck Inlet and surrounded by a lush, green lawn. The dining room is arced so that there are water views from every table. This is a lovely location for weddings, rehearsal dinners, or any special celebration. Finally, you are treated so nicely when you are there. The Pennacchia family welcomes you like family. Visit their website; you'll want to visit them!

Riverhead Restaurants

Digger's Fine Food & Spirits
58 W. Main Street
Riverhead, NY 11901
(631) 369-3200
www.NorthForkWeddings.com/diggers-restaurant/

When you enter Digger's, you know you are in a lot of people's favorite "digs." The sounds are friendly and the pub atmosphere of half paneled walls and low lighting makes daily stress just fall away when you enter. But don't think this is "just another pub." Although you can order hamburgers and sandwiches, and the best corned beef and cabbage you ever had, I can attest to their chef's talents on far more complicated dishes. If you are lucky enough to visit on a day they are offering rack of lamb, order it! Digger's also has a large room to the side of the restaurant / bar area that is used for parties. In fact, when I gave my husband a surprise "25 years before the Bar" party, (he's a lawyer, not an alcoholic), I held it at Digger's. It's prices are reasonable and the food is fabulous.

Indian Island Country Club
661 Riverside Drive
Riverhead, NY 11901
(631) 727-0788
www.indianislandcatering.com

The dining room at Indian Island Country Club has an ambience that is intimate yet inviting and totally avoids the clichés so often found in Golf Club restaurants. The tables, decked in crisp white cloths and hunter green napkins, are spaced to allow for privacy but there is more than enough room for larger groups. Don't think that because I started with the décor, that the food takes a back seat. The menu is diverse and offers fare for all tastes. It's famous for its pan fried oysters but the marinated sirloin is an equally good selection. This wonderful location offers panoramic views of the golf course and the Peconic River making this a perfect choice for lunch or dinner or Sunday Brunch. Indian Island Country Club also hosts weddings, showers, post wedding brunch gatherings, rehearsal dinners and more. See their listing under "North Fork Venues" and be sure to visit the website. Jedediah Hawkins Inn
400 South Jamesport Avenue
South Jamesport, NY 11947
(631) 722-2900
www.JedediahHawkinsInn.com

Everything old is new again, but better. The restoration of this Victorian mansion is so incredibly beautiful, that it's hard to take your eyes off all the details. The paintings, the fabrics, the fireplaces, even the lighting draw you back to a time of gracious living. Indeed, it is a perfect showcase for the culinary artistry of Chef Tom Schaudel. The medium of his art is varied: delicate squash blossoms, littleneck clams, local buffalo mozzarella, duck, black mission figs, LI wines. The completed works are astounding. Whether you chose a burger served in the Captain's Cellar, a salad on the patio overlooking acres of fields and garden, or baked sea bass in the dining room, you are sure to have a truly memorable experience at this first class restaurant, featuring a first class chef. Shelter Island Restaurants

The Pridwin Hotel
Shelter Island, NY
631-749-0476 or 800-273-2497
www.pridwin.com

Whenever I find myself in need of a mini vacation, Shelter Island tops the list as a destination choice. Though a five minute ferry ride from Greenport, I am transported to another world and one of my favorite things is enjoying lunch or dinner at The Pridwin Hotel. Lunch on the deck overlooking Crescent Beach might be a chilled soup, salad, and fresh fruit. Dinner in the dining room is a gourmet event offering the freshest seafood, imaginative cuisine and a wonderful selection of Long Island wines. Their website presents menus, but you have to go there to experience the taste and the romance.

South Fork Restaurants

Alison Restaurant
95 School Street
Bridgehampton, NY 11932
(631) 537-7100
www.AlisonRestaurant.com

All the accolades earned for this restaurant's design, food, and service apply thrice fold to its perfection for a Rehearsal Dinner: simple and stunning, imaginative and impeccable, young and caring. Alison's intuitive sensibility to the comfort of her clientele is evident also in the design of the room set aside for private dinners. It's airy, chic, and amenable to a myriad of table arrangements accommodating a head table, intimate settings, or large family. Located in the center of the Hamptons, it is equidistant from Montauk to Southampton. Chef Robert Gurvich, known for his luscious flavorful food creates individual menus for each event so the menus are unique to the occasion. Alison defines the trend for intimacy and imagination and is the absolutely perfect location for that most important dinner of all. Visit it for dinner or cocktails and then put its phone number in your planner. Whether for on premise or off premise catering, you'll need it!

The Laundry
Restaurant & Bar

341 Pantigo Road (Rte 27)
East Hampton, NY 11937
(631) 324-3199
www.thelaundry.com

The East End is breathing a sigh of relief. The Laundry is not gone; it has just moved to a fabulous new location providing the perfect ambience and attitude for true East End dining. The menu changes frequently to accommodate the seasons for the freshest fruits, produce and fish available. Always on the menu are items such as chicken from Iacono Farm, vegetables from Satur and Sang Lee Farms, and entrees cooked to perfection in a huge wood stove. (Owner Andrew Engle confided that he loves to use cherry wood for the delicate flavor it imparts.) Long time clients will be delighted by the bright and open décor and new visitors will be entranced. This new location can accommodate small private dinners, has an outdoor patio area from which to view the lawns, and is just the spot for a romantic dinner for two or a night out with friends. This is the Hamptons as it once was when style did not mean stuffy and fresh food was not a trend but adherence to good taste.

Trumpets on the Bay
58 South Bay Avenue
Eastport, NY
(631) 325-2900
www.trumpetsonthebay.com

There is no more romantic spot on the East End. Intimate and charming with magnificent views of the bay, Trumpets on the Bay defines fine dining. The continental menu affords choices for every taste, but certainly sea food lovers will be enthralled. Chef's specials are creative and enticing and Long Island favorites like duckling are perfectly prepared. Indeed, this restaurant is gorgeous in the warm weather, but even in winter the fireplace makes for a cozy ambience. Lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch are wonderful all year round. The only disappointment you might experience is your inability to get a table, so be sure to call for reservations. The word is out and you will not want to miss the experience of dining at Trumpets on the Bay. This fine restaurant is only a short drive from Riverhead and North Fork Wine Country.
